• Be careful when meeting strangers. There are predators looking for opportunities to hurt and rob others.
  • On Craiglist, use your anonymous Craigslist email to determine if the potential buyer is serious about buying your car.
  • Arrange to meet in a public place like in the parking lot of your bank.
  • Consider asking a friend to join you.
  • Answer as many questions as possible before showing the car in person to avoid wasting time.
  • Ask for name and ID of person coming to test drive your car.
  • Make it clear what price your are expecting.
  • Ask buyer to bring a copy of his driver’s license and cash for the car if he decides to buy it. No checks. If a loan is needed, that should be done by the buyer before or after the test drive, not in your car.
  • Accompany the potential buyer on the test drive.
  • Have an emergency number ready to be dialed if you suspect a problem.
  • If you do not drive with the potential buyer, ask for the keys to his vehicle while test driving yours.
  • Keep the test drive short.
  • Have all paperwork ready to sign. A bill of sale is optional if you want to include that with the transfer of title. It is useful to have in your records.
  • Deposit money into your bank account.
